I'm currently monitoring a bunch of L.Niger nests at a quiet park near my house. I've been checking up on them daily with my kit ready to catch me some new queens, but overall ant activity has been disappointingly low in my village this summer.
I was beginning to think I missed the flights, but at two of the nests I found a bunch of alates poised and ready just inside the entrance (though when I checked this morning they were gone). So far I've varied the times I visit but can't seem to find much correlation between time of day/weather. This is the first time I've been actively hunting alates, any tips?

I am also monitoring the Lasius and Myrmica nests. Activity has picked up in the past couple of days, with the odd Alate crossing from one part of the nest to another. Saw a male fly off and got hopeful, but no others seen.... With the wet weather coming back, they haven't got long before another delay.

Hi brackenhawk
Welcome to the forum.
Tips for flying ant spotting? I tend to look at this time of year when it is hot, with vary little wind, particularly after recent rains.

Hey there Our recent weather was apparently perfect for this, but despite all the reports and news coverage the alates didn't budge where I live. Sadly the rains are on their way back for a while, so maybe after they pass I'll have a bit more luck. I have a few nearby friends keeping their eyes open for me which is a comfort (not to mention the sources found here).

Woah major ant collecting in kent! Lasius Nigers and flavus queens all tubed up! In regards to someone asking about the A.E.S fair, its one of 2 annual fairs held by the amateur entomological society in London (Kempton Park) this coming October. Then in York, not sure where though I've been! Around April time. Its the largest insect fair in Europe I believe. They have Prying mantis to spider, centipedes, snails, moths, butterflies, cockroaches. You name it! I've never really seen any ants there so I thought I would do the fair this year and represent them

Seen my first Lasius Niger (I think) flying ants at work today, they seem to be crawling from a crack in the pavement at the entrance Might grab one if I see a mated one.

Nice to know they've been spotted today, was debating whether or not to go have a look. We had a quick spot of rain a couple hours ago and it's fairly warm right now so perhaps I'll get lucky this evening.
