Well, my tin foil idea seems to have worked a beauty. I place a small piece of locust into the feeding tube (the one wrapped in tin foil) about 15 minutes ago. On taking a peek just now I was able to see at least 4 workers feeding from it. w00t! ;D

15 August 2009, Saturday
There has been some more next expansion going on, evident by the fact that there is a small mound of earth appearing in the nesting box and in the port to which the feeding tube connects. I am thinking of sprinkling a few grass seeds into the nesting box to see what happens. I was in town today and intended to get some, but forgot.
I gave these ants a piece of wax worm a moment ago and on peeking into the darkened feeding tube, I can see at least one worker eating.

These ants have filled up the tube port that goes into the feeding test tube with soil, though there are tiny holes in it that they use to go in and out of. With the tube covered in tin foil and therefore in darkness, it seems the ants are happier to forage in there now. I looked in the ant farm in the early hours of the morning the other night and could see workers on the surface of the soil; evidently more nocturnal.

22 August 2009, Saturday
I think there has been a little nest building activity over the past few days as there are more soil particles on the surface and I am sure little bits are being added each night, though this may just be wishful thinking on my part. I was quite shocked to discover 3 Lasius niger workers wandering around in the nesting box of the flavus colony. I am not sure how they go in there and I cannot see any signs of fighting. I managed to get them out and put them back into their own tank. I will have to keep an eye on these lot.

Keep a very close eye on those Niger ants Myrm. I lost an entire M.Barbarus colony to the inquisitive instincts of the little Lasius.

22 August 2009, Saturday - *** UPDATE ***Just thought I would take a peek in the flavus colony feeding test tube and so I carefully drew back the tin foil covering, when I saw not a flavus worker in there, but a niger worker!!!! GORDON BENNETT!! What is she doing in there? The only way she could have got in there was by entering the nest and finding the tunnel to the test tube. I quickly removed her and put her back in her own tank. I took a quick peek in the flavus nesting box. There are quite a few more tunnels now with flavus workers within, but no sign of any more niger workers. There is a flavus worker on the surface of their soil. Hopefully that is the last of the naughty nigers in there! I am going to have to think of a punishment for these naughty Lasius nigers. @ Bin Lids; what punishments do you get from your parents when you are naughty? It may give me a few ideas.

27 August 2009, ThursdayI have had to move this ant farm to the other side of my room as I am fed up with those naughty Lasius niger ants (are they related to you by any chance, Flavus101? ) raiding this farm. They keep getting into the flavus tank and into their food tube, even though they have their own food. This could be causing the flavus workers to be too scared to come out and eat. Hopefully this will now make the flavus a lot happier.

Well, since moving the L. flavus tank there have been no more excursions by the L. niger colony; and I should hope not too! I have moved the flavus tank to the other side of the room. If the nigers managed to find it again I would have been shocked; though nigers are certainly the naughtiest ants in the world so I guess it could happen.
I have given them some locust and honey-water but it is difficult to tell whether they are actually taking it.

4 September 2009, Friday (w00t!)
Not much going on really in this colony over the past few days; just the occasional worker out foraging/eating.

17 September 2009, Thursday
There has been a lot more activity in this nest recently and there is now a little mound of soil on the surface just like you see in your lawns at home.
I have also seen them feeding too. ;D
