I was whatchin g the Nuptial flight last year , and foound out where Lasius Niger land , some of them cross my driveway , but Ill be waiting there for them Also , Myrmica rubra , just up the road basicly everyone I know there has a Myrmica Rubra colony in their garden , and Im sure some queens will land on the road, where Ill hopefully get them! What is the maximum amount of Myrmica rubra queens per colony? I was thinking a colony with 3 would be good , But I realy do want atleast 2 queens:D

Well bascicaly thr more queens you get, in a colony, the more ants they will produce!
I would say aim for 3-5 per colony.
But bear in mind that they may grow quite quick, and I think Myrmica forage during colony founding.

Again I will say that it is not guarantied that, that will happen. My Myrmica Rubra colony are scared of insects. If you want that, I would recommend that you do NOT keep them in a usu all starter set, but maybe a test tube, or a basin. This is as in a starter set, if 1 ant finds a cricket, the main colony, which is 1/2 a meter away, will not know. Where-as in a basin, the colony is never more than 20 or so cm away.

I think the maximum number of queens in wild colonies is about 100. Imagine that! You'd have about 1000 first workers! I doubt that would work in captivity though, and I expect the wild colonies with that number of queens will have gained most of them since colony foundation. I'd love to try a 100 queen colony in captivity though, just to see what happens. Unfortunately, there are no Myrmica colonies near my house which I know of. I have only witnessed a Myrmica flight once, on a stroke of luck, and all the queens I captured died for some unknown reason.

Yes much like that, a lot more natural, as they dig in any direction, but you cannot see them as they areunlikely to stick to the glass ... Maybe this would be a good nest. :http://www.anthills.net/desert.html asit is an 'all in 1'. And it is an artificial nest so all chambers/tunnels/brood can be seen.

Probably around there, though I have never seen 1, there is only Lasius Niger and a few Flavus colonies in my garden.

Hello. The AntHills.Net Desert model has been discontinued. I suggest the Tree Stumps Nest.
